The film is based on the novel of the same name by A. J. Cronin. The film is set during 1880 in a small Scottish town of Levenford where a peculiar building, half cottage, and half-castle are surrounded by stone walls. The townspeople name the area "Hatter's Castle" in honor of James Brodie who built the area. James Brodie is a devious and malicious man who influences his family members to live in fear. His wife and daughter Mary receive no love from him, while his son Angus receives a better treatment. Brodie’s lover is the barmaid of the Winton Arms tavern named Nancy, whose former lover, Dennis is given a job by Brodie after Nancy convinces him to fire his loyal shop assistant, Perry. Brodie thinks Dennis is Nancy’s step-brother. Dennis helps robs Brodie's competitors, the Mungo Hat Co., in acquiring the shop next door, while stealing from him at the same time. Dr. Renwick is called to help the sick Mrs. Brodie and is in love with Mary, but Dennis has plans to marry her for the money. Problems arise due to Brodie’s selfish ways.
