Max and his father are interested in finding rich women to marry. Neither one has money of their own, which doesn’t help their situation. Max proposes marriage to Martha, but she declines when she finds out how poor he is, for she is as well. She moves on to accept Sir Kelvin’s proposal, but changes her mind the next day. Max’s father Florian loses a bunch of money after gambling to win money for Max’s wedding. Max marries the rich Lady Joan to help with his father’s debt even though he is not in love with her.
