Philadelphia socialites Tracy Lord and C.K. Dexter Haven married very quickly, which led them to get a divorce. Dexter’s drinking became a problem in their marriage. Two years after their divorce, Tracy is engaged to be married to a wealthy businessman and aspiring politician George Kittredge, who is head over heels in love with Tracy. Dexter attends the wedding ceremony since he works for the tabloid Spy magazine and is trying to get the story for publisher and editor Sidney Kidd.
