The main character, Lydia Weston leaves her small town in search of bigger dreams on Broadway.   Making quite a name for herself as a Broadway star, she continues to keep in touch with family and friends back home sending newspaper clippings and sharing her success.  When her beau, Peter decides to surprise her in New York with a visit, he realizes she is actually not successful and finds her without a job and penniless.
