This historical, romantic drama tells the story of the romance and struggle between Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex.  Despite her love for Essex the Queen also fears his popularity, and the political intrigues of the court drive them apart.  The plot is further complicated by the maneuverings of a jealous lady-in-waiting who is also in love with Essex.

Nominated for five Academy Awards, this movie was a hit for Warner Brothers.
