Junior Donal is a former performer who becomes a music teacher at Knickerbocker University in New York. He hires Peggy Portefield to convince Sergei Alexandrovich, the director of the Russian Ballet, to show a friend's jazzy "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet. Junior is in a relationship with Frankie Frayne, but becomes attracted to the company's main ballerina, Vera Barnova, where he becomes the male lead in "Slaughter". Vera’s flame is angered by this and enlists two criminals to murder Junior during his performance.
