Joe Bell is back in prison after already serving time for a robbery he did not commit.  He feels bitter about the situation, but is in love with the supervisor’s daughter.  They end up fighting, leaving the old man to die since he had a weak heart.  He runs away with Mabel, for he feels no one will believe him.
