Looks Abroad is a fascinating news/documentary show that aired in 1939 and 1940. During those years the world was in turmoil, and on the brink of World War II. Americans were watching Hitler's Nazi army invading and conquering much of Europe. Many Americans felt that America
should get involved and help England and France, amongst other countries, fend off the Nazi threat. Many others felt that it was not America
's concern and we should stay out of the conflict
The Foreign Policy Association was an independent, non-partisan organization that sought to educate people on the situation in Europe and what it might mean for Americans at home. The Foreign Policy Association teamed up with NBC Radio and created America
Looks Abroad, a 15 minute news and documentary show designed to break down the complex political environment into terms and ideas that the average American could understand.
Each weekly episode looked at one current event or concept and had various political figures and broadcasters discuss both sides of the issue. Today, these radio shows offer us great insight into the times and history of the beginning of American involvement in WWII.
