Tough district attorney Jim Stowell (Warren William) is convinced that every murderer deserves to be sentenced to death, regardless of the motives or circumstances. He prosecutes elderly Professor Shaw MacAllen (Ralph Morgan) in the murder of his wife, who was killed in a fit of jealous rage, and works hard to send him to the electric chair. However, Jim discovers fierce jealousy himself when nice male family friend Phil (William Lundigan) pays too much attention to his lonely and neglected wife Lucy (Gail Patrick). In the coming days, Shaw's rage and jealousy grows over Lucy and Phil's completely innocent friendship, leading to thoughts of killing his wife and her supposed lover. Jim almost murders Lucy, but catches himself at the last moment, coming to understand Professor MacAllen's motivation for murder, having experienced it himself. Understanding the lesson of mercy, Jim decides to stay Professor MacAllen's execution.
