This 1937 musical film is based on the novel, Banjo by Harlem Renaissance. It takes place on the streets of Marseilles. The main character, played by Paul Robeson works on the docks. He is married to Eslanda Robeson who works as the owner of a café. Elisabeth Welch plays the café singer who falls in love with Robeson, despite the fact he is already married.
