A rivalry between two lonesome mountain families has been brewing for many years and now the Tollivers and the Falins face their land and mine coals to be used for construction on a railroad. Red MacMurray plays Jack Hale, an outsider who gets mixed up with the politics of the area. The beautiful June Tolliver becomes interested in him, but her cousin Dave played by Henry Fonda is also in love with her.
