Ernest Bliss (Cary Grant) has just inherited a large fortune but is miserable, since he did not earn any of the money.  In an attempt to break this feeling of boredom, he wagers with his friend that he can earn a living for one year without touching any of his inheritance.  During his time working, he meets Frances Clayton (Mary Brian), a poor woman who is about to be forced into a marriage of convenience.  Bliss must decide if he’s to help this girl or maintain his wager.
