The film takes place in the late 1800's in England and revolves around the main character, Pamela who has no interest in ever marrying. She has a difficult time finding work but finally gets hired to work for a woman 's magazine. Soon along with covering such topics as sewing and cooking she begins to lead discussions on gender equality, child labor, medical care etc and soon she is now viewed as a leader of the "woman's movement". On top of this, she is faced with the pressure of being a single mother having a child out of wedlock which was highly frowned upon during that era.
