Franz Josef is the Austrian Emperor who has planned for his nephew, the Archduke Paul Gustave, known as Gustl to marry Princess Matilda. Gustl has no interest in her, for is in love with the Hungarian Countess Zarika Rafay. Gustl cannot confide with his uncle about this since he is not fond of her family. The Emperor approves of Gustl to have one last wild and crazy night with a girl, but she must not be connected to anyone royal. They have this conversation at the ballet, so Gustle informs his uncle that he is in love with a ballerina named Lisl Gluck, who he randomly picks. She happens to be the most untalented dancer.
