Shirley Temple's father is a rebel officer who is taken into custody after he secretly goes down to visit his family on their neglected farm.  A Yankee feels bad for the man and plans a way to free him. Their plan goes wrong when they are discovered and ordered to be killed. Shirley and Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson go to President Lincoln to intervene.
