A lavish production based on the life of the great composer Stephen Foster, from his early success through his decline, degradation, and death from alcoholism. The film follows Foster (Montgomery) from his first studies for the ministry and then his first success in the years prior to the American Civil War. It eventually ends with his death in New York in a drunken state. His songs have proven to be very popular with gneration after generation as they fell into the Public Domain.
