Tom’s mother has not had a job in a while and Ed’s father has just lost his job. The two high school sophomores want to help their parents out by finding work. They decide to leave and find there are many other young people like them in search of jobs. They meet Sally who is also looking for work and the three stick together for the rest of the time. When they finally arrive in New York, Ed feels work may be available for them there.
