A Free Soul is a 1931 MGM production.  The dramatic film was directed by Clarence Brown.

Stephen Ashe is an alcoholic defense attorney who had successfully defended Ace Wilfong, a mobster.

When Ashe’s daughter Jan begins a relationship with Ace, but then wants to end it, her former fiancé takes matters into his own hands and murders the man.  Now it is up to Stephen Ashe to defend Dwight Winthrop when he is charged with murder.

Lionel Barrymore was awarded the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in the film, and the film is credited with turning Clark Gable into a leading man instead of a supporting player.
