Nappus is an old black man who works on a farm and has a daughter named Chloe who is married to a lazy man named Gummy. Chloe does both the housework and manual labor, while Gummy stays out in the sun. They have two children named Chiquapin and Trailia who become ill. Gummy takes them to a voodoo woman. This doesn’t help, for both the mother and daughter die. Nappus sells his farm and mule to send Chiquapin north to become a doctor, in hopes the boy will help come back to the south and help those in need.
