Dan Winterslip, a rich and successful man in Honolulu, has been estranged from his brother for 20 years. His brother happens to own a hotel next to Winterslip’s territory. Their sister Minerva travels from Boston to help bring the two brothers together. Plans are interrupted when John Quincy Winterslip, Dan's nephew, receives a note telling him to recover a box from a San Francisco attic and release the items into the sea. He happens to be on board a ship headed for Hawaii where there are other people after the same box. Dan Winterslip is then killed. Charlie Chan, a Chinese detective, comes to the rescue in finding the killer and the mystery behind the box.
