Spencer Van Gore is smitten with the lovely and naïve Harrie Lou Harkness so he convinces his Yacht Captain to perform a sham marriage so he can take advantage of her.  Ready to move on, Spencer disappears, leaving Hattie believing him dead, and her alone to discover she is pregnant.  Later she brings their infant daughter to his wealthy parents for help.
