This film takes place in Springfield, Illinois, where Brandon, a surveyor, aspires of constructing a railway to the west, but contractor Marsh is not really sold on the idea. Abraham Lincoln believes in Brandon’s idea and it is soon discovered there is a new pass that will be 200 miles less than expected. The Cheyenne keeps them from going on with their new plans. With the Cheyenne is a white man who murders Brandon. Many years pass and it is now 1862, where Lincoln signs the bill allowing construction of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways. There are still many problems they must face during the construction.

In 2011, this film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry .
