Daniel Laneen counters Muriel at an embassy ball and has a desire to visit him in the desert where he resides, especially since she has been informed that Lizette is his mistress. His area is attacked by Barthampton who sets his sights on Muriel. Lane ends up killing him and Lizette is killed after stating she was there only to help Lane. Muriel and Lane get back together after the misunderstanding as the British Army comes to help.
