Living with her mother and her stern father, Mollie has led a dreary life so far.  When her mother is dying, in defiance of her father's wishes, she bequethes a sum of money to Mollie for something frivolous, leaving the money with the preacher at the church.  Things are misinterpreted when the preacher gives Mollie a pretty hat from New York and Mollie's reputation suffers as the gossips spread their stories about Mollie.
