ALLAN DWAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Allan Dwan was born on April 3rd, 1885 in Toronto, Canada with the birth name Joseph Aloysius Dwan. Over the course of his career as a director who would direct over 1000 films including a number of shorts and one-reelers.
Dwan was the founder of such production companies as Allan Dwan Productions active between 1919 and 1921 as well as co-founder of Associated Producers, Inc. in 1919 and in 1922 he served as President of Dwan Film Corporation.
Allan worked as a director with such studios as, Universal, Paramount, Republic, Fox, RKO and United Artists with a career in the industry lasting from 1911 through 1961. Although he pursued a successful career as a director, originally he received his college degree in engineering from the University of Notre Dame.
Dwan relocated to the United States from Canada at the age of eleven and after college he was offered a job with Essanay Studios as a script writer which lead to him living in New York as well as part time in Hollywood.
In 1911 he lived in La Mesa, California where he operated Flying A Studios, which was one of the first Motion Picture Studios in California. Over the course of his career some of his more successful films he directed included, "Robin Hood" (1922) starring Douglas Fairbanks, "Heidi" (1937) starring Shirley Temple, the musical comedy "The Three Musketeers" (1939) starring Don Ameche, The Ritz Brothers, Binnie Barnes, Gloria Stuart, Joseph Schildkraut, Lionel Atwill, John 'Dusty' King and John Carradine, "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949) starring John Wayne, John Agar, Adele Mara, Richard Webb, Forrest Tucker, Richard Jaeckel and James Brown, "Passion" (1954) starring Cornel Wilde, Yvonne De Carlo and Raymond Burr, "Cattle Queen of Montana" (1954) an American Western film starring Barbara Stanwyck, Ronald Reagan, Jack Elam, Chubby Johnson and Morris Ankrum, "Escape From Burma" (1955) starring Errol Flynn, "Hold Back the Night" (1956) a Korean War film starring John Payne, Mona Freeman, Peter Graves, Chuck Connors and Audrey Dalton, "The Restless Breed" (1957) a western starring Scott Brady, Anne Bancroft, Jay C. Flippen, Jim Davis and Leo Gordon and his final film to direct was in 1961, "Most Dangerous Man Alive" starring Ron Randell, Debra Paget and Elaine Stewart.
Allan Dwan married twice throughout his life time, first to Pauline Bush from 1915 through 1921. He then married Marie Shelton in 1922 and they remained together until 1954. He did not re-marry and on December 28th, 1981 Allan Dwan passed away at the age of ninety-six in Woodland Hills, California after suffering from heart failure. His remains are interred in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, California.
