WILLIAM SHATNER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
William Shatner was born on March 22nd, 1931 in Montreal, Quebec in Canada with the middle name Alan, born to Anne and Joseph Shatner. He has two sisters and received his early years education ay Willingdon Elementary School and West Hill High School. After graduating from high school he enrolled at McGill University in Montreal and earned a bachelor degree of Commerce.
His first job out of college was working as a business manager for the Mountain Playhouse in Montreal and then he decided to join the Canadian National Repertory Theatre and began receiving stage training as a Shakespearean actor. He began appearing in such productions as, "Henry V" and "Oedipus Rex".
Now an experienced stage actor, he began working on Broadway. Soon he broke into the television industry and added to his credits appearances on such shows as, "Space Command" (1953), "The Canadian Howdy Doody Show" (1954), "Encounter" (1955), "On Camera" (1956) and "Goodyear Playhouse" (1956).
His first real feature film role was in 1958 on, "The Brothers Karamazov" starring Yul Byrnner followed by the television movie, "The Christmas Tree" (1958) and the films, "The Explosive Generation" (1961) and "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961).
In addition to his film work, he remained adding numerous television credits to his resume on such series as, "The Dupont Show of the Month", "Twilight Zone", "The Defenders", "Outlaws", "Adventures in Paradise", "Play of the Week", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Tactic".
His most well known role is his portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in the 1966 science fiction television series, "Star Trek" and later doing the voice over work for the animated Star Trek series between 1973 and 1974. His role on the series lasted from 1966 through 1969.
After Star Trek came to an end, he continued working in the industry showing no intent of slowing down his pace. In the late 60's and early 70's, Shatner was seen all over television on, "Hawaii Five-O", "Columbo", "Kung Fu", "Marcus Welby, M.D", "The Rookies", "The Six Million Dollar Man", "Ironside" and starring on "T.J. Hooker".
His Star Trek experience soon began to attract a following known as "Trekkies". He was a cultural icon and Star Trek conventions began to show up all over the country. It was this spark of interest in the series that intrigued paramount Studio's to see if they could make a film out of the "Star Trek" phenomenon.
His film roles were no where near as successful as his earlier work until big budget feature Star Trek films came about such as, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979), "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982), "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" (1984), "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (1986), "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" (1989) and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991).
More highly successful films were then being added to his credits making guest appearances in such features as, "Loaded Weapon" (1993), "Miss Congeniality" (2000), "Shoot or Be Shot" (2002) and "Groom Lake" (2002).
Shatner has also been the face and voice for a variety of commercials and products such as, Priceline. His voice is also heard on such films as, "Over the Hedge" (2006), "The Wild" (2006) and the television series, "Atomic Betty" (2005).
Not only is he a well known actor, he has also managed to hold onto a successful music career which began with the release of his 1968 album, "The Transformed Man". He has released two more albums since then, "Has Been" (2004) and "Seeking Major Tom" (2011).
William Shatner is also a published author, having written several books of his experience playing Captain Kirk and well as being the co-writer for a number of novels that take place in the, Star Trek Universe.
Shatner has married four different times, first in 1956 to Gloria Rand and they had three children together before the marriage ended in divorce in 1969. He then married Marcy Lafferty in 1973 however by 1996, this marriage also came to an end. His third wife was Nerine Kidd whom he wed in 1997 and they were together until she passed away from an accidental drowning in their home pool in 1999. His fourth and current wife is Elizabeth Shatner and they married in 2001.
More recently, Shatner has returned to television appearing in the series, "The Practice" (1997) and "Boston Legal" (2004), both roles for which he won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He also has recurring roles on, "Rookie Blue" (2012), "Psych" (2011-2012) and "$#*! My Dad Says" (2010-2012).
He also starred in as well as directed the 2011 documentary, "The Captains" which follows William Shatner as he interviews other actors who have had the chance to portray starship captains from the Star Trek franchise.
He has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame.
William Shatner is also involved in a number of different charitable causes such as selling his own kidney stone for $25,000 to donate the profit to GoldenPalace.com where the money was helped to build a house by Habitat for Humanity. He also plays poker on the World Poker Tour and all winnings are donated to his favorite charity, which is Hollywood Charity Horse Show which helps raise funds for children's charities.
