After high school, Bissell enrolled at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and it was then that he began to develop an interest in acting.  He joined the Carolina Playmakers and began working as a stage actor.

He is most well known for his role as the evil scientist in the 1957 film, "I Was A Teenager Werewolf" featuring a newcomer to acting, Michael Landon as the Werewolf.  He is also known for his recurring roles on the television series, "Bachelor Father" (1957) starring Joh Forsythe and "The Time Tunnel" (1966), portraying General Heywood Kirk.

Other more prominent films he added to his resume included, "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954) "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956), "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein" (1957), "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) starring Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, James Coburn, Eli Wallach and Charles Bronson just to name a few of the stars, "The Tall Stranger" (1957), "Warlock" (1959) starring Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn and "The Time Machine" (1960).

Towards the later half of his career he focused mainly on television series appearing on, "Route 66", "The Roaring 20's", "Maverick", "The Deputy", "The Law & Mr. Jones", "The Detectives", "The Rifleman", "Ripcord", "Surfside 6", "Bonanza", "Lawman", "Going My Way", "The Dakota's", "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" and "Wagon Train".

In addition to working as an actor, Bissell served on the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) board of directors for eighteen years.  Over the course of his career he appeared in over 300 films and television roles.  He was also honored in 1994 with a life career award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

Whit Bissell married three times throughout his lifetime, first to Adrienne Marden in 1938 and they had two children together before the marriage came to an end in 1954.  He then married Dilys Mary Shan Jukes in 1954 and they had one child together and stayed married until she passed away in 1958.  His third wife was Jennifer Raine whom he wed in 1967 and again remained together until she passed in 1993.  Three years later, Bissell passed away from Parkinson's disease on March 5th, 1996 in Woodland Hills, California.  His remains are interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
