WALTER ABEL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Walter Abel was born on June 6th, 1898 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his acting training from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and then began his career in acting as a stage performer.
soon he was appearing on Broadway in such productions as, "Forbidden" (1919). He worked on a couple silent films as well during this time, "Out of a Clear Sky" (1918) and "The North Wind's Malice" (1920).
He then took the next ten years of his career to focus 100 percent on stage acting and it was not until the early 30's that he returned to the film industry adding such credits as, "Liliom" (1930) and "The Three Musketeers" (1935) starring with Paul Lukas, John Qualen, Heather Angel and Margot Grahame.
Over the course of his career he maintained his association with working as a Broadway actor but still pursued films as well. He appeared in over 40 Broadway productions and seventy film and television roles.
Some of his more well known film roles included, "Arise, My Love" (1940) starring starring Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, Dennis O'Keefe, George Zucco and Dick Purcell, "Holiday Inn" (1942) starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds, Louise Beavers, Virginia Dale and Irving Bacon, "Fired Wife" (1943) co-starring Diana Barrymore, Robert Paige and Louise Allbritton, "Kiss and Tell" (1945) starring with Shirley Temple, "13 Rue Madeleine" (1947) starring James Cagney, Annabella, Karl Malden and Richard Conte, "Dream Girl" (1948), "That Lady in Ermine" (1948) starring Betty Grable, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Cesar Romero, "Island in the Sky" (1953) starring John Wayne, James Arness, Lloyd Nolan, Andy Devine, Paul Fix, Mike Connors, Fess Parker, Darryl Hickman, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer and Harry Carey Jr., "The Indian Fighter" (1955) starring Kirk Douglas, Elsa Martinelli, Walter Matthau, Alan Hale Jr., Eduard Franz, Elisha Cook Jr., Lane Chandler and Lon Chaney Jr.
Walter then turned his focus mainly towards television roles appearing on such series as, "Robert Montgomery Presents", "Studio One in Hollywood", "Tales of Tomorrow", "Climax!", "Kraft Theatre", "Playhouse 90", "The Defenders" and "Seaway".
He married only once to Marietta Bitter in 1926 and they had two children and remained married until she passed away in 1979. He did not re-marry and his last acting role was in 1984 on the film, "Grace Quigley" starring Katharine Hepburn and Nick Nolte. He then passed away on March 26th, 1987 in Essex, Connecticut after suffering from a heart attack.
