TED KNIGHT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Ted knight was born on December 7th, 1923 in Terryville, Connecticut with the birth name Tadeus Wladyslaw Konopka. He dropped out of High School early to join the military during World War II and was decorated five times for bravery.
When he completed his service and studied acting in Hartford, Connecticut and enjoyed working with puppets and doing ventriloquism.
It as this talent that gave him the opportunity to work on television in a kids show from 1950 to 1955. He then found work in New York hosting the Early Show. This followed with working as a radio announcer up until 1957.
He then took the advice of a co worker and left for a Hollywood to pursue a acting career in film. Between the 50's and late 60's, Knight found employment doing voice over work for a number of commercials and did some film work in, "Psycho" (1960). He also made a number of television appearances on such shows as, "The New Loretta Young Show", "Highway Patrol", "How to Marry a Millionaire", "The Eleventh Hour", "Get Smart", "Bonanza" and "The Wild Wild West".
Along with his film and voice over experience he also voiced a number of Superhero cartoons such as, "Flash, The Atom, Superman, Super Friends and the Justice League.
Knight's final film role was in 1980 in, "CaddyShack". It was due to his strong characteristic voice that he always managed to find work as an announcer or doing voice work for cartoon characters. He is most well known and remembered for his role on, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" as the newscaster which earned him six Emmy nominations and winning and Emmy for, "Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Comedy" in 1973 and 1976.
Ted Knight married only one time to Dorothy Smith in 1948 and they remained together having three children, Ted, Elyse and Eric before he passed away on August 26th, 1986 in Los Angeles, California from cancer. He is interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to Television. he was also honored by his hometown of Terryville, Connecticut dedicating a bridge on Canal Street in his memory.
