Susan Sarandon ACTOR

Susan Sarandon was born on October 4th, 1946 in New York City, New York with the birth name Susan Abigail Tomalin, born to Lenora Marie and Phillip Leslie Tomalin.  She was the oldest of nine children and grew up in a family involved in entertainment.  Her father used to perform as a singer at various night clubs and worked as a television producer.  In 1982, after forty years of marriage, her parents separated.
She was raised in Edison, New Jersey and received her early years education from a number or Roman Catholic Schools.  She earned her high school diploma from Edison High in 1964 and then enrolled at the Catholic University of America.  It was while at college that she met her only husband, actor, Chris Sarandon whom she wed in 1967.

Sarandon was not an actress and never had any intentions of pursuing a career in the industry, however, when she attended a casting call with her husband for a film called, "Joe" (1970), she ended up being chosen for the film and her husband was not cast.

Soon she was working in the industry as well appearing on television in such series as, "A World Apart" (1970-1971), "Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law" (1971) and "Search for Tomorrow" (1972).

By 1974 she added two more films to her resume, "Lovin' Molly" and "The Front Page".  Soon more successful film roles succeeded such as, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975), "The Great Waldo Pepper" (1975), "Pretty Baby" (1978) and "Atlantic City" (1980), a role for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Although, she was long divorced from her actor husband, she remained in the industry and continued adding successful feature films to her credits such as, "The Witches of Eastwick" (1987), "Bull Durham" (1988), "A Dry White Season" (1989), "White Palace" (1990), "Thelma & Louise" (1991), "Lorenzo's Oil" (1992) and "The Client" (1994), for which the last three mentioned films also awarded her with three more Academy Award nominations for Best Actress.

In 1995, she finally won the best Actress award for her role in the film, "Dead Man Walking".  More recently, she has appeared in the films, "Romance & Cigarettes" (2005), "Elizabethtown" 92005), "Enchanted" (2007), "The Lovely Bones" (2007), and "Middle of Nowhere" (2007).

Sarandon has also added a variety of television roles to her resume such as, "Friends", "Malcolm in the Middle", "Saturday Night Live", "30 Rock" and in 2010 she joined the cast of the HBO series, "The Miraculous Year".

She has also narrated a number of documentaries and done voice over work on the television series, "The Simpsons" and the film, "Sonnet 22".  Her most recent work includes the television series, "The Big C" (2012) and the films, "That's My Boy" (2012), "Irwin & Fran" (2012), "The Wedding" (2012), "Cloud Atlas" (2012), "The Company You Keep" (2012), "Hemlock Drive" (2012) and soon to release, "Snitch" and "Mother's Day" (both 2013).

In addition to her career as an actress she remains involved in a number of political and liberal causes.  In 1999 she was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is public with her support of various human right issues.  She is an advocate for victims of hunger and HIV/AIDS and is also a spokesperson for Heifer International.
