Strother Martin ACTOR

Strother Martin was born on March 26th, 1919 in Kokomo, Indiana with the birth name Strother Martin Jr.  He was the youngest of three children born to Strother Douglas Martin and Ethel Dunlap Martin.  Strother was raised in Indianapolis and Cloverdale, Indiana.  As a youth he was very involved in swimming and diving and even won the National Junior Springboard Diving Championship.  Then he went on to college and studied at the University of Michigan and was also a member of the college diving team. 

During World War II he served as a United States Navy swimming instructor.  After completing his service he relocated to California with the goals of becoming an actor.  He found various jobs to support himself and also worked as a swimming instructor for Marion Davies and Charlie Chaplin's children. 
He soon found work as an extra on films due to his swimming capabilities and worked on a local children's television show called, "Mabel's Fables".  Soon small roles were being offered to him and then he became involved in some more television work with a man by the name of Sam Peckinpah
By 1960 he was becoming a pretty well known actor and was doing some film work with John Ford and Henry Hathaway.  He worked on such films as, "Nevada Smith" (1966) starring Steve McQueen, Karl Malden, Brian Keith, Arthur Kennedy, Suzanne Pleshette, Raf Vallone, Janet Margolin, Pat Hingle, Howard Da Silva, Martin Landau, Iron Eyes Cody and Paul Fix, "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) starring Paul Newman, George Kennedy, J.D. Cannon, Ralph Waite, Dennis Hopper, Morgan Woodward, Luke Askew, Jo Van Fleet, Anthony Zerbe, Joe Don Baker, Wayne Rogers and Harry Dean Stanton, "The Wild Bunch" (1969) starring William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson, Warren Oates, L. Q. Jones, Albert Dekker, Bo Hopkins and Dub Taylor, "Fools' Parade" (1971) starring James Stewart, George Kennedy, Kurt Russell, Anne Baxter and William Windom and "Sssssss" (1973) co-starring Dirk Benedict, Heather Menzies and Reb Brown, in which during the filming, he was bit by a snake.
He also appeared in a total of six films with John Wayne, "The Horse Soldiers" (1959) starring with William Holden, Constance Towers, Althea Gibson, Judson Pratt, Ken Curtis, Willis Bouchey, Denver Pyle, Carleton Young, Hank Worden and William Forrest, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) also starring alongside Edmond O'Brien, James Stewart, Vera Miles, Ken Murray, John Carradine, Lee Marvin, John Qualen, Willis Bouchey, Carleton Young, Lee Van Cleef, Jeanette Nolan, Robert F. Simon, Shug Fisher, Woody Strode, Andy Devine and Denver Pyle, "McLintock!" Strother also made several appearances on television such as on, "Frontier" (1956), "The Law and Mr. Jones" (1960), "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961), "The Virginian" (1965-1970), "Bonanza" (1964-1972) and "The Rockford Files" (1977). 
The majority of roles he portrayed were that of a villain and he was best known for the western roles in which he was cast in.  He was cast as a villain in the film, "The Horse Soldiers" (1959) and on the TV series, "The Road West" (1967).   

He worked on such tv shows as, "The Man Behind the Badge", "Zane Grey Theatre", "The Adventures of Jim Bowie", "The Lone Wolf", "Dragnet", "Lassie" and "Playhouse 90".
He was even involved in the dialog of the cult film, "Dark Night of the Scarecrow" with his friend and filmmaker, J.D. Feigelson. 
Strother married only once to Helen Meisels on December 18th, 1966 and they remained together until he suffered a heart attack on August 1st, 1980 in Thousand Oaks, California at the age of sixty one.  He is interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, California.
