STEWART GRANGER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Stewart Granger was born on May 6th, 1913 in Kensington, London in the United Kingdom with the birth name James Lablanche Stewart. His grandfather was actor, Luigi Lablanche. His parents were major James Stewart and Frederica Eliza. After completing high school, Granger enrolled at Epsom College in pursuit of a medical degree. However, before completing his degree he chose to drop out of college and pursue a career in acting.
He went on to study drama at the Webber-Douglas School of Dramatic Art in London. It did not take long before he was working as a stage actor in such productions as, "The Cardinal at Hull" (1935) and "The Sun Never Sets" (1938).
When World War II came about, he took a break from acting and joined the British Army, however, after becoming disabled, he was released from duty and returned back to his acting career.
By the mid 40's, Granger was working in the film industry appearing on the big screen in such features as, "The Man in Grey" (1943), "Caesar and Cleopatra" (1945) and "Hamlet" (1948) for which he earned his first Oscar nomination.
In 1950, Hollywood took notice of him and MGM decided to sign Granger to a film contract. He began getting lead roles in such films as, "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1952), "Scaremouche" (1952) and "Young Bess" (1953).
Although he was working in Hollywood, he was appearing in a number of films with his then wife, Jean Simmons and it seemed as though every film he worked on, she was actually the center of attention. A marriage that began in 1950 ended in divorce in 1960 after having one child together.
Granger continued to work in the industry in the United States on such films as, "King Solomon's Mines" (1950) and "North to Alaska" (1960) starring John Wayne, which was the last Hollywood film he made. Majority of his work thereafter was filmed overseas in such countries as Germany and Italy.
Some of these German made films were, "Unter Geiern" (1964), "Der Ölprinz" (1965) and "Old Surehand" (1965). Granger did return to the United States on occasion to appear in such television series as, "The Virginian" (1971) and "Hotel" (1983-1987).
Prior to his 2nd marriage to Jean Simmons he was briefly married to Elspeth March from 1938 through 1948 and they had two children together, Jamie and Lindsey before this marriage ended. He did end up remarrying for a third time to Caroline LeCerf in 1964 and they too had one child before this marriage ended in 1969. Granger did not remarry again and he passed away at the age of eighty, in Santa Monica, California after suffering from prostate cancer on August 16th, 1993.
