SLIM SUMMERVILLE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Slim Summerville was born on July 10th, 1892 in Albuquerque, New Mexico with the birth name George Joseph Somerville. His mother passed away when he was just five years old and his father moved to numerous places throughout the country.
As a young teenager he ran away from home and happened to become friends with Mack Sennett through a mutual friend. Sennett took to Summerville and by the age of nineteen, with no intentions of ever becoming an actor, Summerville began appearing in silent films.
Some of his early short film roles included, "Tillie's Punctured Romance" starring Marie Dressler, Mabel Normand, Charles Chaplin and the Keystone Cops, "The Knockout" starring Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplin, Minta Durfee, Edgar Kennedy, Al 'Fuzzy' St. John, Mack Sennett and Mack Swain , "Love and Bullets", "Laughing Gas" starring Charlie Chaplin, Alice Howell, Mack Swain, Joseph Sutherland, Fritz Schade and Josef Swickard, "Fatty and the Heiress" starring Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, Minta Durfee, Edward Dillon and Al 'Fuzzy' St. John, "Mabel's Busy Day" starring Mabel Normand, Charles Chaplin, Chester Conklin, Edgar Kennedy, Al 'Fuzzy' St. John, Charley Chase and Mack Sennett and "Those Happy Days" (all 1914).
Along with working as an actor on silent films, he also worked on the other side of the industry as a director working on projects for Fox and Universal Studio's such as, "Pardon Me" (1921), "Hold the Line" (1922), "High and Dry" (1922), "Unreal News Reel" (1923), "The Riding Master" (1923), "The Pinhead" (1924), "Wanted a Bride" (1926) and "Hopalong" (1927) among many others.
When the silent film era came to an end, he returned to acting and had no problem making the transition to talkies. Some of his more well know film roles included, Academy Award winner "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930) starring Louis Wolheim, Lew Ayres, John Wray, Arnold Lucy, William Bakewell, Edmund Breese, Harold Goodwin, Beryl Mercer and Ben Alexander, "King of Jazz" (1930), "The Front Page" (1931) starring Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, Mae Clarke, Mary Brian, George E. Stone, Matt Moore, Walter Catlett, Frank McHugh, Clarence Wilson and Edward Everett Horton, "Captain January" (1936) starring Shirley Temple, "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938), "Tobacco Road" (1941) and "The Hoodlum Saint" (1946) starring William Powell, Esther Williams, James Gleason, Lewis Stone, Rags Ragland, Frank McHugh, Louis Jean Heydt, Henry O'Neill, Charles Trowbridge, Addison Richards, Tom Dugan, Trevor Bardette, Roman Bohnen and Charles Arnt.
He passed away from a stroke on January 6th, 1946 in Laguna Beach, California. at the age of fifty three. He married twice during his lifetime, first briefly to Gertrude M. Roell in 1927 and they adopted a child together before the marriage ended in 1936. He then wed Eleanor Brown and remained married until he passed away.
Slim Summerville was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry as well as being inducted into the New Mexico Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2012.
