SHEMP HOWARD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Shemp Howard was born on March 17th, 1895 in Brooklyn, New York with the birth name Samuel Horwitz.  His brothers were Moe Howard and Curly Howard, both fellow stooges.  Throughout his acting career he made numerous appearances as one of the "Three Stooges" but also appeared on the big screen in such films as "The Bank Dick" (1940) and the short, "Hold That Lion" (1947).  He was an original member of the Three Stooges until he was replaced by his brother, Curly Howard.
 
When his brother, Jerome also known as Curly, became ill after suffering a stroke, Shemp returned to the series and stayed a cast member until he passed away appearing in a total of seventy seven shorts.  
 
During the early 40's his solo career had peaked and he was working as a contract player with Universal Studios.  He also enjoyed many years of success as a clown, comedian and also worked as a member of Ted Healy's vaudeville team.  Shemp was the only member of the "Three Stooges" who was able to maintain quite a successful solo career.  He was even cast in the recurring role of "Knobby Walsh" in the "Joe Palooka" movies series.    
 
He married only one time to Gertrude 'Babe' Frank on March 15th, 1925 and they remained together having one child before he passed away in the back seat of his car on November 22nd, 1955 in Hollywood, California after suffering a heart attack.  He is interred at Home of Peace Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
 
Due to his sudden death, stand-ins has to be used to complete a couple of "Three Stooges" short films that were still in production and this type of work became known in the industry as, "shemping".  
 
All Three Stooges were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their contribution to the Motion Pictures Industry.
