He began his career as a French and literature teacher at Lincoln University and also worked for a time as a  sales rep for a wine and liquor company.  With no formal acting training, he one day for no apparent reason decided to try and embark on a career as an actor.
He auditioned for the New York Shakespeare Festival for a role in the play, "Julius Caesar" and got the part of Soothsayer.  Thereafter, he appeared in such productions as, Taming of the Shrew", "Titus Andronicus", "Othello", "King Lear" and "Troilus and Cressida".

In addition to working as a stage actor he also gained experience on the other side of the industry writing and directing the play, "A Hand Is on the Gate: An Evening of Negro Poetry and Folk Music".

By the mid 1960's, Roscoe also began appearing in such films as, "The Connection" (1962), "The Comedians" (1967) co-starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Alec Guinness, Paul Ford, Lillian Gish, Raymond St. Jacques, Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones and Georg Stanford Brown, "Up Tight!" He continued to alternate between stage and film work, returning to Broadway a couple more times later in his career appearing in the productions, "My One and Only" and "Two Trains Running".
Along with film and stage work, Roscoe graced the television screen with roles on such series as, "All in the Family", "Bonanza", "Sanford and Son", "Mannix", "Good Times", "A Different World", "Law & Order", "Will & Grace" and "The Cosby Show", a role for which he won an Emmy Award.
