ROLAND WINTERS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Roland Winters was born on November 22nd, 1904 in Boston, Massachusetts with the birth name Roland Winternitz. His father, Felix was a violinist and composer and later worked as a professor in Boston at the New England Conservatory.
As a teenager, Winters worked on a cargo ship that would sail to Central America as well as the West Indies during the summer months. He also began becoming involved in acting doing stage performances throughout Boston.
In 1924, Winters made his Broadway debut in "Firebrand" and soon he was offered a job in radio as an announcer for the Braves and Red Sox games. He remained working in radio from 1931 through 1947. He was also signed by Monogram Pictures in the 1940's.
When Sidney Toler who took over Charlie Chan's role on the Monogram series retired due to illness, Winters took over the role and made a total of six Charlie Chan films such as "The Chinese Ring" (1947) and "The Sky Dragon" (1949). He was the fifth actor to be cast in this particular role.
When the series came to an end, Winters did not stop acting. He remained making appearances in films and on a number of television shows such as "So Big", "Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff" (1949), "Blue Hawaii" (1961), "Follow That Dream" (1962), "Never Steal Anything Small" (1959) and was also a regular on the series, "Meet Millie" (1952), "The New Phil Silvers Show" (1963) and "The Smothers Brothers Show" (1965).
