ROGER SMITH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Roger Smith was born on December 18th, 1932 in South Gate, California to parents Dallas and Leone Smith. From a young age his parents enrolled him in an acting school where at the age of six he was already studying singing, dancing and elocution. After getting his high school diploma he went on to study at the University of Arizona after earning a football scholarship.
When he completed his degree he briefly joined the Naval Reserves in Hawaii. He happened to become acquainted with an actor by the name of James Cagney who encouraged Smith to pursue a career as an actor.
Smith took his advice and relocated to Hollywood where he was soon signed to a contract with Columbia Pictures. He worked on a number of films in the early part of his career such as, "Man of a Thousand Faces" (1957), "Operation Mad Ball" (1957), "No Time to be Young" (1957) and "Crash Landing" (1958).
In 1959 he switched his contract over to Warner Brothers. He was mostly appearing on numerous television series such as, "Hawaiian Eye" (1960), "Surfside 6" (1962), "Mister Roberts" (1965) and his most well known role as Jeff Spencer on, "77 Sunset Strip" (1958-1963). In total he appeared in 74 episodes of this series and would have continued working if he did not become ill with a blood clot in his brain.
Sadly, in 1965 after he was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disease he had to retire with his last appearance being on, "Criminal Affair" in 1968. In 1985 when he went into remission, he did not return to acting, but instead managed his current wife's Las Vegas show career, Ann-Margaret who he married in 1967. He was married once before to Victoria Shaw an actress from Australia and they had three children, Tracey, Jordan and Dallas. They divorced in 1965.
