RODDY MCDOWALL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Roddy McDowall was born on September 17th, 1928 in Herne Hill, London in the United Kingdom with the birth name Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall. His father, Thomas McDowall was a Merchant Mariner and his mother, Winifred Corcoran always had aspirations for her son to be a movie star.
By the age of five his mother enrolled him in acting classes and by the age of ten he debuted in his first film, "Murder in the Family" (1938). When World War II began, his mother took both her children and relocated to the United States. He continued to pursue his acting career, working next on the film, "How Green Was My Valley" (1941) starring Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, Donald Crisp and Anna Lee, which won the Oscar for Best Film of the year and directed by John Ford.
McDowall continued to work on films as a child actor starring in such movies as, "The Pied Piper" (1942), "My Friend Flicka" (1943) starring with Preston Foster, Rita Johnson and James Bell and "Lassie Come Home" (1943) starring alongside Donald Crisp, Dame May Whitty, Elsa Lanchester, Edmund Gwenn and Nigel Bruce. When he turned eighteen he left Hollywood and decided to see what working on the stage was all about. He relocated to New York City and worked no Broadway as well as Connecticut's Stratford Festival performing in a number of Shakespeare plays. His final stage performance was playing Ebenezer Scrooge in the production of, "A Christmas Carol" (1997).
In total, McDowall appeared in over 150 films such as, "Cleopatra" (1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, "The Longest Day" (1962) starring John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Sean Connery, Curt Jurgens, Eddie Albert, Edmond O'Brien, Peter Lawford, Richard Burton and Rod Steiger, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965) starring an ensemble cast including Max von Sydow, Charlton Heston, Dorothy McGuire, Telly Savalas and Jose Ferrer just to name a few and "Planet of the Apes" (1968) co-starring Charlton Heston, James Whitmore, Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter, James Daly and Linda Harrison along with 3 other "Planet of the Apes" films. He also starred in, "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" (1974) starring Peter Fonda, Susan George, Adam Rourke and Vic Morrow, "Evil Under the Sun" (1982) starring Peter Ustinov, James Mason and Diana Rigg and "Class of 1984" (1982) starring Perry King, Michael J. Fox and Timothy Van Patten. Along with his film and stage work he also did a variety of television shows such as, "Batman" (1992-1994) and "Pinky and the Brain" (1996-1998). McDowall was also very interested in photography as a side hobby and managed alongside his busy acting career to publish a total of five photography books displaying all his work.
He was honored in 1998 by the Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his acting career and his photography. He passed away on October 3rd, 1998 in Studio city, California from lung cancer and his ashes were scattered. It has been documented that his ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean but that is not actually true, however it is unknown what ever came of his ashes.
Even today, many who knew him speak highly of him as a good man who never made an enemy throughout his lifetime. Roddy never married and although he never made any public announcements about his personal preferences, rumor has it he was a closet homosexual.
