ROBERT VAUGHN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert Vaughn, born Robert Frances Vaughn on November 22nd, 1932 in New York City, USA. His parents were both in show biz. His mother, Marcella Frances was a stage actress and his father, Gerald Walter Vaughn was a radio actor. Robert was raised in an Irish Catholic family and his grandparents raised him in Minneapolis, Minnesota whenever his mother was on the road traveling.
He attended North High School and went on to attend the university of Minnesota as a journalism major. However, after a few years he chose to leave school and move to Los Angeles with his mother. He enrolled in Los Angeles City College and then transferred to Los Angeles State College where he majored in the Applied Arts and Sciences and went on to get a masters in theater. He did not stop there, after he graduated, he went on to receive a PHD in communications from the University of Southern California.
His role in "The Young Philadelphians" (1959) with Paul Newman was his first Oscar Nomination followed by a role in one of the greatest westerns ever alongside Yul Brenner "The Magnificent Seven" (1960). Even though he worked in some very popular films, he also maintained employment in Television. He appeared in over 200 guest spot roles between the 1950"s and 1960"s.
His first major role was in, "The Lieutenant" (1963) and from this role he was offered the role of Napoleon Solo in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (1964). This television series became one of the most popular TV shows during the 1960's. When the series ended, he turned his focus towards film.
He starred in "The Bridge at Remagen" (1969) and "The Mind of Mr. Soames" (1970). Two years later, he moved to England accepting a role in television again on, "The Protectors" (1972) and remained in England the first half of the 1970's. He also published his dissertation as the book Only Victims: A Study of Show Business Blacklisting. Embarking back on a journey back to the US, he married actress Linda Staab in 1974 at the Church of Good Shepard in Beverly Hills, CA at the age of 42 and then he took on another television role on, "Washington: Behind Closed Doors" (1977) which resulted in an Emmy Award. The following year, he was nominated for his appearance on, "Backstairs At the White House" (1979).
Entering the 80's he worked in both television and film with roles in such films as, "S.O.B." (1981), "Superman III" (1983) and "The Delta Force" (1986). Vaughn did not slow down his career moving into the 90's with a wide range of Made-For-TV movies such as, "The Nanny" (1993) and "Law and Order" (1990).
He remains married to Linda Staab and together they have two children whom they adopted, Cassidy born in 1976 and Caitlin born in 1981. Vaughn has always been an active Democrat, however, he was always a liberal and disliked Ronald Reagan. The California Democratic party wanted Vaughn to challenge Reagan for Governor. Vaughn currently resides with his wife in Ridgefield, CT and in November of 2008 he released his autobiography, "A Fortune Life".
