ROBERT STACK BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert Stack was born on January 13th, 1919 in Los Angeles, California with the birth name Robert Langford Modini Stack born to parents Elizabeth and James. At the age of one his parents divorced and by the age of three his mother took him and relocated to Europe. His older brother, James Langford Jr. stayed in the United States with his father. He began his childhood not speaking any English but was fluent in both Italian and French. When he returned back to the United States at the age of six he had to learn how to speak the language since his parents decided to remarry.
When Robert completed high school he went on to study drama classes at USC and in 1939 he came upon the Studio at Universal City. They were in search for their next big star and Robert was chosen to be cast in the film, "First Love" (1939) and he became an overnight success. For the next ten years of his career, he was mostly cast in western films such as, "Bullfighter and the Lady" (1951). In 1952 he was cast in the film, "Bwana Devil" which was the first 3-D film and broke box office records. 1954 brought about the suspense thriller "The High and the Mighty" starring with John Wayne, Claire Trevor, Laraine Day, Jan Sterling, Phil Harris, Robert Newton, David Brian, Julie Bishop, Paul Kelly, Paul Fix, William Campbell, John Qualen, Regis Toomey, George Cleveland, Douglas Fowley and Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer.
He followed this success with receiving an Academy Award nomination for his role in the film, "Written on the Wind" (1956) which he filmed on loan to Universal. However, since he was under a contract with 20th Century, they were quite upset with the success he received from that film.
When his contract with Fox ended he decided to give television acting a try. He worked on such series as, "The Untouchables" (1959) and the television movie, "The Scarface Mob" (1959). Robert also wrote a biography called, "Straight Shooting" in 1980. He worked well into the 90's and had a highly successful acting career.
Robert married only one time to Rosemarie Stack in 1956 and the couple had two children together, Charles and Elizabeth, before he passed away on May 14th, 2003 in Beverly Hills, California after suffering a heart attack. He is interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Westwood, California.
