ROBERT REED BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert Reed was born on October 19th, 1932 in the northeast Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois to parents Helen and John Robert Rietz Sr. He grew up in Des Plaines, Illinois, Muskogee, Oklahoma and Navasota, Texas and attended school at Community Consolidated School District 62 where he became interested in acting and would perform in every school production.
After completing is High School education he went on to Northwestern College and studied Shakespeare. He later transferred to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
He performed in a number of College plays and when he decided it was time to pursue a career as an actor he took on the stage name Robert Reed. He also came to the realization at this time that he was homosexual, however he continued to date women so as not to lead on to anyone he knew his true sexual identity.
As he entered the acting industry he was cast in a number of television series making guest appearances on such shows as, "Father Knows Best", "The Defenders" (1961-1965), "Ironside", "The Mod Squad", "Harry O", "Jigsaw John", "Crazy Like a Fox" and "Paper Chase" amongst many others.
He is most well known for his role playing father character, Mike Brady in the long running television show "The Brady Bunch" (1969-1974). He also had a recurring role on "Mannix" playing Lt. Adam Tobias.
He reprised the role of Mike Brady on "The Brady Bunch Hour" and Brady Brides: along with a number of made for television Brady movies. He continued to work on stage as well as making some more television appearances on such shows as, "Hawaii Five-O", "Charlie's Angels", "Murder, She Wrote", "Jake the Fatman" and "The Love Boat".
Despite knowing he was homosexual, he chose to marry Marilyn Rosenberg in 1954 and they had one daughter, Karen before ending the marriage in 1959. Robert never married again and moved to South Pasadena, California.
He later found out he had contracted HIV and after battling cancer and lymphoma he passed away on May 12th, 1992 at his home in South Pasadena, California. His remains were cremated and his ashes were interred in Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois. Sadly, his mother and daughter Karen declined to attend his memorial service, unable to accept his true sexual identity.
