RICHARD LOO BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Richard Loo was born on October 1st, 1903 in Maui, Hawaii. He is one of the most familiar Asian actors seen in American films between the 1930's and 1940's. Loo was raised in Hawaii and his family relocated to California when he was a teenager.
After high school, Loo attended the University of California and began to embark on a career in business. When the stock market crashed in 1929, things were not going so well for him financially and he decided to re-think his career goals.
Loo began working in local amateur theater productions and realized how much he enjoyed acting. Loo also took notice that there were not very many Asian American actors on the scene.
By 1931 he was appearing on the big screen in his first film and soon added such credits as, "Student Tour" (1934), "Mad Holiday" (1936), "That Certain Woman" (1937) and "Panama Patrol" (1939).
During the course of his career he would add over 120 film roles, with some of the more well known ones, "The Purple Heart" (1944), "The Keys of the Kingdom" (1944), "God Is My Co-Pilot" (1945), "Back to Bataan" (1945) starring John Wayne and Anthony Quinn, "The Steel Helmet" (1951), "The Conqueror" (1956) starring John Wayne and Susan Hayward and "The Sand Pebbles" (1966) starring Steve McQueen and Richard Crenna. One of his latest film roles was in 1974 portraying Hai Fat in, "The Man With The Golden Gun", a James Bond film.
In addition to his film work he also appeared in a number of television commercials for Toyota cars and added a variety of television appearances to his resume such as, "The Incredible Hulk", "Kung Fu", "Perry Mason", "Wagon Train", "The Dakotas", "Bewitched", "Ironside" and "Police Story".
Throughout his lifetime, Richard Loo married twice, first to Hollywood agent, Bessie Loo in 1929 and they had two children together before the marriage ended in 1960. His second wife was Hope Loo whom he wed in 1964 and he had one step daughter from his wife's previous relationship. This marriage lasted until Loo passed away on November 20th, 1983 in Los Angeles, California after suffering from cerebral hemorrhaging.
