RICHARD GERE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Richard Gere was born on August 31st, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents Homer and Doris Gere with the birth name, Richard Tiffany Gere.  He was the 2nd born to a total of five children and from a young age he already developed an interest in music. he began with playing a number of instruments throughout High School and even wrote music for some school productions.
 
After earning his high school diploma from North Syracuse Central High School he earned a scholarship for gymnastics to study at the University of Massachusetts.  Originally his goals were to earn a degree in philosophy, however, after just two years he decided to drop out of college and begin pursuing a career as an actor.
 
Gere began as a stage actor appearing in a production of, "Grease" (1973) followed by roles in such plays as, "Taming of the Shrew" and "Bent".  Soon he was working in the film industry appearing on the screen in such movies as, "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1977) also starring Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, Tom Berenger, Brian Dennehy, LeVar Burton, William Atherton and Richard Kiley, "American Gigolo" (1980) co-starring Lauren Hutton, Hector Elizondo, Nina Van Pallandt and Bill Duke, "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1980) starring alongside of actress Debra Winger, David Keith, Robert Loggia, Victor French, Lisa Blount, David Caruso, Louis Gossett Jr. and Tony Plana and one of his most well known films up to that point alongside, actress Julia Roberts in, "Pretty Woman" (1990) and also featuring Ralph Bellamy, Jason Alexander, Hector Elizondo and Laura San Giacomo.  This film was a huge hit and won the People's Choice Award for Best Movie. 
 
Another highly successful film was when Gere and Roberts worked together again on, "Runaway Bride" (1999) starring Julia Roberts, Christopher Meloni, Joan Cusack and Hector Elizondo , another huge success.  Some of his latest roles have been in, "Chicago" (2002) starring alongside Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly, Christine Baranski, Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs, Colm Feore and Mya Harrison, "Shall We Dance' (2004) sharing the spotlight with Jennifer Lopez and Susan Sarandon just to name a few , "The Hunting Party" (2007) also starring Terrence Howard, Diane Kruger, James Brolin, Dylan Baker and Jesse Eisenberg, "The Double" (2011) with Martin Sheen, Topher Grace, Odette Yustman and Stephen Moyer and soon to release, "Arbitrage" (2012) co-starring Brit Marling and Susan Sarandon and "Movie 43" (2012). 
 
Richard Gere has married twice throughout his lifetime.  His first wife was Cindy Crawford from 1991 through 1995.  He then married, Carey Lowell in 2002 and they have one son, Homer James Jigme Gee and remain together today. 
 
Gere has received a number of honors throughout his career in entertainment.  In 1991, he was picked by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the world and in 1999, People's magazine voted him as the Sexiest Man Alive.  Gere was also honored for his lifetime Achievement from the 34th Cairo International Film Festival in 2010. 
 
Although he has been nominated a number of times throughout his career for a Golden Globe and once for a Screen Actors Guild Award, he has never yet received an Oscar nomination.  
 
Gere is also very involved in a number of humanitarian efforts such as being a founding member of, "Tibet House" which is a nonprofit organization that helps preserve Tibetan culture.  He is also President of the Gere Foundation founded in 1991 that focuses on international humanitarian issues. Gere is also very involved in ecological causes and AIDS awareness and was involved in establishing the AIDS Care Home which is a community where women and children in India can live.
