RICARDO MONTALBAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Ricardo Montalban was born on November 25th, 1920 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico with the birth name Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalban Merino.  He was the youngest of 3 other siblings.  He spent his childhood in Mexico, and then as a teenager he relocated to Los Angeles, California to live with his older brother who was attempting to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Ricardo finished up his school at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles and was involved in the school productions.  After graduating from high school, he followed along with his brother to New York and he had the chance for a small part on a stage play called, "Her Cardboard Lover" followed by some small roles in a number of stage productions.

After finding out his mother in Mexico was quite ill, he returned back to his home country to care for his mother.  While in Mexico, he continued to pursue a career as an actor, and this time got involved in the film industry in Mexico.  He was becoming a highly successful actor in Mexico and it was then that MGM took notice of Ricardo.  He was soon offered a role in an American film with MGM and so he chose to relocate back to Los Angeles.

His American film debut was in, "Fiesta" (1947) followed by, "On An Island With You" (1948).  He was the perfect example of a, "Latin Lover" character that all the woman would flock too, and MGM was highly impressed with him so he was then offered a contract with them. The next film he worked on was, "Neptune's Daughter" (1949) and he also did a film called, "Latin Lovers" (1953).

Ricardo was having a highly successful career by the late 40's, however, he was also very type cast as the Latin lover or gringo type character that it was hard to get cast in roles that showed off his talent in different ways.  He did get cast as a cop in the film, "Border Incident" (1949) and played an Indian chief in the film, "Across the Wide Missouri" (1951).  During the filming of this feature, Ricardo suffered an injury and for the rest of his life he would walk with a limp due to a fall of a horse.

During the mid 50's he returned back to his original love of acting as a stage performer and actually finally had the chance to make his Broadway debut in the production of, "Seventh Heaven" (1955) followed by the performance that earned him a Tony nomination as the only non African American performer in "Jamaica' (1957).

Alongside a successful stage and film career, Ricardo also made numerous appearances on various television shows such as, "Playhouse 90" (1956), "Colgate Theatre" (1958), "Death Valley Days" (1952) and "Star Trek" (1966).  It was a television series directed by Aaron Spelling titled, "Fantasy Island" (1977) which finally got him to the level of stardom he had been longing for.  He portrayed the character, Roarke and was a cast member for six seasons.

He followed his success on this show, by winning an Emmy on the mini-series, "How the West Was Won" (1978).  He also received a chance to work on a numerous amount of commercials which helped increase his household name.

As he continued to work as an actor in Hollywood, he also expressed his dissatisfaction with Hollywood's portrayal of Mexicans and therefore, he helped found and organization called, "Nosotros", which was a Los Angeles theatre based company designed specifically for Latino's who worked in the acting industry.

As Ricardo began to age, he was unable to deal with the pain his spinal injury had caused years early and was soon confined to a wheelchair.  Ricardo Montalban passed away on January 14th, 2009 in Los Angeles, California due to congestive heart failure.

He married only once to Georgiana Young on October 26th, 1944 through her death in 2007, having a total of four children, two sons and two daughters.  Ricardo Montalban will always be remembered as a man who made an impact on the acting industry for Latino actors and was a talented man in any challenge he undertook.
