REDD FOXX BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Redd Foxx was born on December 9th, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri with the birth name John Elroy Sanford. His career in entertainment began as a stand-up comedian on the “Chitlin” Circuit. He was one of the few 'blue Humor' comedians during the 1940’s and 1950’s. This type of comedy was considered too dirty for white audiences.
In the 1960’s he became one of the first black comedians to entertain white audiences on the Las Vegas trip and soon after his records became available in white record stores and he began getting minor roles on such shows as, “The Ed Sullivan Show” (1948) and “The Red Skelton Hour” (1951). In 1972 he was given his own television series, “Sanford and Son” (1972) which was a show that broke down racial stereotypes and was a huge success. In 1977, he left the show and started his own variety show, however it only lasted one year.
Other roles soon followed such as in the film, “Norman…Is That You? “(1976) and the television movie, “Ghost of a Chance” (1987) and the film, “Harlem Nights” (1989). Sadly his career was cut short when he was filming a television episode and collapsed. He passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles, California on October 11th, 1991 and the cause of death was recorded as a heart attack.
He had married four times throughout his lifetime. First to Evelyn Killebrew from 1948 through 1951. He then married Betty Jean Harris in 1956 and had one adopted child before his marriage ended in divorce in 1975. He then married Yun Chi Chung in 1976 and remained married through 1981. His final marriage was to Ka Ho Cho in 1991 and they remained together until he passed away on October 11th, 1991. He is interred at Palm Memorial Gardens in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since he had such financial troubles his wife could not even cover the cost of his funeral, however, luckily, his friend Eddie Murphy took care of the expense. Foxx was honored with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 1992.
