Raul Julia ACTOR

Raul Julia was born on March 9th, 1940 in San Juan, Puerto Rico with the birth name Raul Rafael Carlos Julia y Arcelay.  His parents were Olga Arcelay and Raúl Juliá.  He was raised in Puerto Rico and complete his high school diploma at Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola High in San Juan.  Julia was very involved in acting from a young age performing in a number of school productions.  He also learned to speak fluent English early on which played a huge role in helping his career get off the ground in later years.  Although he knew he wanted to perform he wanted to make sure he pleased his parents and therefore, pursued a college degree at Fordham University as well as the University of Puerto Rico.  He continued to get an education and perform at a number of night clubs.  After earning a degree in liberal arts, Julia began to focus on entertaining.
He first became involved in entertainment when he was performing in a nightclub in San Juan when an actor by the name of Orson Bean saw him and suggested he move to the United States and pursue a career in entertainment.
Raul decided to follow this advice and relocated to New York City where it did not take long to find work in a number of off Broadway stage productions.  Some of his earlier stage roles were in, "King Lear", "Othello" and "Two Gentlemen of Verona".
Along with working as a stage actor he also broke into the film industry and was seen on the big screen in such films as, "Spider Woman" (1985), "The Burning Season" (1994), "The Adams Family" (1991) and again in 1993, "The Organization" (1971), "The Panic in Needle Park" (1971), "Street Fighter" (1994) and the film adaptation of, "The Tempest" (1982).
Julia also added numerous television appearances to his resume such as, "Love and Life", "Sesame Street", The Bob Newhart Show", "Where's Charley", "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank"
Some of his later film roles were in, "La Gran Fiesta" (1987), "Arms and the Man" (1985), "Compromising Positions" (1985), "The Morning After" (1986), "Moon Over Parador" (1988), Onassis" (1988), "Romero" (1989) and "Presumed Innocent" (1990) starring Harrison Ford.
Along with his acting career after a trip to India he founded, "The Hunger Project" a non-profit organization with goals to eliminate world hunger.  he would donate food to a food bank once a month and also promoted this program on television and radio.  Raul was also involved in a number of charities having to do with helping children.  He lent support to the Hispanic organization of Latin Actors and also co-founded, Visiones Luminosas which assisted in helping promote screen writers.
Sadly even though he was at the height of his career he had been suffering from what was thought as stomach cancer for quite some time and although he had underwent surgery and continued to work in the industry his health soon declined so bad he could no longer fight the illness.  Before his time at the age of fifty four, he passed away on October 24th, 1994 in Manhasset, New York after actually suffering complications from a stroke.  His remains were sent back to Puerto Rico where he was buried at Buxeda Cemetery in Cupey, Puerto Rico.
Raul had married twice throughout his lifetime.  His first wife was Magda Vasallo from 1965 through 1969.  He then married, Merel Poloway in 1976 and the couple had two children and remained together until his passing.
He proved himself to be a very talented actor.  He took his roles very seriously and made sure to really study and prepare for each role.  He received numerous awards throughout his career such as a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cable Ace Award, an Emmy Award and numerous Tony Awards and nominations.  He was also inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame on Broadway in 1996.
