Ramon Novarro ACTOR

Ramon Novarro was born on February 6th, 1899 in Durango, Mexico with the birth name Jose Ramón Gil Samaniego to Dr. Mariano N. Samaniego a Mexican dentist.  Novarro was born into a family of 14 children total.  In 1916, he moved with his family as refugees to Los Angeles, California. He became involved in a variety of different jobs to help his family financially such as working as a singing waiter, ballet dancer and a piano teacher until he had the opportunity to work in films as an extra in 1917.
By 1923, he was getting cast in more prominent roles.  When he was cast in the film, "Scaramouche" (1923) he began to get the attention of people who mattered in Hollywood.  In 1925, Novarro was cast in the film, "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" and this was the major start of an amazing career to follow.

He was becoming the screens leading Latino actor.  Some of his lead film work where he was cast as the lead included, "The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg" (1927), "Devil-May-care" (1929). "The Pagan" (1929), "Mata Hari" (1932) and "The Barbarian" (1933) all done under his contract with MGM.

When his contract with MGM expired it was not renewed and therefore he continued to free lance and also worked with Republic Pictures.  Some of his later film roles were in such features as, "We Were Strangers" (1949) and "The Outriders" (1950).  He also did some television appearances such as on NBC's, "The High Chaparral" (1968).
His personal life was not as successful as his professional life.  He struggled with alcohol addiction as well as dealing with his homosexuality.  Sadly, on October 30th, 1968 he was murdered by two brothers, Paul and Tom Ferguson who were only 22 and 17 years of age.  The two men were hired to come to Novarro's home in North Hollywood, California to perform sexual acts.  The two men believed, Novarro had a large sum of money in his home and therefore murdered him, but only got away with twenty dollars.

Novarro is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los angeles, California and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
