Paul Winfield was born on May 22nd, 1939 in Portland, Oregon with the middle name Edward.  His mother was, Lois Beatrice and his step father was Clarence Winfield.  His family relocated to Los Angeles, California when he was still young and he attended Manual Arts High School.  When he was still a senior in high school he got his first real acting job and then chose to move back to Portland, Oregon on a two year scholarship to study at the University of Portland.  He later excelled in his studies at Stanford and Los Angeles City College.  Prior to earning his bachelors degree he left college just six credits short to pursue acting fulltime.

He began working as a stage actor performing in the play, "The Dutchman and the Toilet" followed by a role in, "The Latent Heterosexual".  He continued working as a stage actor with the Stanford Repertory Theatre and the Inner Cultural Center Theatre in Los Angeles.

Winfield did not limit himself to stage acting although that was his first love.  He appeared on a number of films as well as television shows.  Some credits included, "Perry Mason", "Death Valley Days", "Mission: Impossible", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", "Julia" and such films as, "The Lost Man" (1969), "R.P.M." Paul also appeared on a variety of television movies such as, "The Sophisticated Gents" (1981), "Under Siege" (1986) and "The Women of Brewster Place" (1989).  More substantial film roles succeeded such as, "Damnation Alley" (1977), "Conrack" (1974) and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982).

In 1994 he won an Emmy Award for his role on the television series, "Picket Fences" and followed this by more films, "Catfish in Black Bean Sauce" (1999) and "Relax‚ĶIt's Just Sex" (1998).  He also had a recurring role on, "Touched By an Angel" (1995-2003).

He never neglected his love of the stage and towards the later part of his career he added such stage credits as, "Richard III", "Othello", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", "The Seagull", "A Few Good Men" and "Checkmates".

Paul Winfield was a homosexual and lived with his partner, Charles Gillan Jr. for thirty years.  On March 5th, 2002 his partner passed away from bone cancer and just two years later at the age of sixty four he passed away on March 7th, 2004 in Los Angeles, California after suffering from a heart attack.  His remains are interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
