OTTO KRUGER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Otto Kruger was born on September 6th, 1885 in Toledo, Ohio. As a young boy, he grew up being exposed to the music world and originally planned on pursuing a career as a musician, until he later chose to change direction and switch to acting.
Art the age of fifteen, he first appeared in a musical on Broadway which sparked his intrigue in the acting world. In 1915, he debuted in his first film role, "The Runaway Wife" co-starring Stewart Baird, Justina Wayne and Orlando Daly, which soon followed with roles in, "Around the Clock with the Marines" (1918) and "The Home Girl" (1928) also starring Miriam Hopkins, Margalo Gillmore and Sylvia Field.
He really began to make a name for himself as an actor when he appeared on the film, "Chained" (1934) starring Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Stu Erwin, Una O'Connor, Marjorie Gateson and Akim Tamiroff. Some of his more well known film roles soon followed such as, "Mercy Island" (1941) with with Ray Middleton and Gloria Dickson, "Corregidor" (1943) with Elissa Landi, Donald Woods, Rick Vallin, I. Stanford Jolley and Frank Jenks, "Hitler's Children" (1943) starring Tim Holt, Bonita Granville, Hans Conried, H. B. Warner, Lloyd Corrigan, Nancy Gates, Gavin Muir and Kent Smith, "Power of the Press" (1943) starring Guy Kibbee, Lee Tracy, Gloria Dickson and Victor Jory, "Woman Who Came Back" (1945) co-starring John Loder, Nancy Kelly, Ruth Ford, Harry Tyler, Jeanne Gail and J. Farrell MacDonald and "Duel in the Sun" (1946) starring alongside Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Gregory Peck, Lillian Gish, Walter Huston, Lane Chandler, Sidney Blackmer, Butterfly McQueen, Harry Carey, Herbert Marshall, Charles Bickford, Tilly Losch, Joan Tetzel, Griff Barnett, Scott McKay, Charles Dingle, Dan White and Lionel Barrymore.
Along with his many film roles he was also quite successful on television appearing on such series as, "The Man and the Challenge", "Climax!", "Lux Video Theatre", "Armstrong Circle Theatre", "Bonanza", "Perry Mason", "Studio One in Hollywood", "Dr. Kildare", "Checkmate", "Thriller" and "The Law and Mr. Jones" starring James Whitmore.
Kruger chose to retire from acting in the 1960's after his final appearances on, "High Noon" (1952) starring Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Lloyd Bridges, Sheb Wooley, Robert J. Wilke, Katy Jurado, Harry Morgan, Thomas Mitchell, Ian MacDonald, Eve McVeagh, Morgan Farley, Lon Chaney Jr. and Lee Van Cleef, "Magnificent Obsession" (1954) starring with Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson, Barbara Rush, Agnes Moorehead, Gregg Palmer and Paul Cavanagh and "Della" (1964) starring Joan Crawford, Paul Burke, Charles Bickford, Richard Carlson, Diane Baker, Robert Sampson and Barney Phillips.
Otto Kruger married only once to Sue MacManamy in 1919 and they had one child together and remained married until he passed away on his eighty ninth birthday on September 6th, 1974 in Woodland Hills, California after suffering from a stroke as well as cerebral vascular complication. His remains are interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, California.
