OLIVER REED BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Oliver Reed was born on February 13th, 1938 in Wimbledon, England with the birth name Robert Oliver Reed, born to Peter and Marcia Reed. Although he never had any formal acting or training experience he went on to become one of the biggest names in Britain.
Prior to pursuing a career as an actor he served in the British Army in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Upon completing his military service, Reed began working as an extra on a number of films.
Some of his early film roles included appearances in, "Sword of Sherwood Forest" (1960), "The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll" (1960), "The Curse of the Werewolf" (1961), "Captain Clegg" (1962), "Pirates of Blood River" (1962) and "The Damned" (1963).
As his career progressed he chose not to relocate to Los Angels and preferred to make a name for himself in Europe. Some of his more well known film roles included, "The System" (1964), "The Trap" (1966), "Women in Love" (1969), "Hannibal Brooks" (1969), "The Devils" (1971), "The Three Musketeers" (1973), "The Four Musketeers" (1974), "Burnt Offerings" (1976), "The Big Sleep" (1978), "Castaway" (1986) and "The Return of the Musketeers" (1989).
Beginning in the 90's roles were becoming less available to him and he gained a reputation for taking roles in exploited films, mostly filed in South Africa with Harry Alan Towers during the time of the apartheid. Some of these films were, "Skeleton Coast" (1987) and "Gor" (1987). Both released straight to video.
His final film role was in, "Gladiator", however he passed away during it's filming and many scenes had to use a double to finish the film. It was released after his death in 2000, however he still received a nomination for a British Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Oliver Reed married twice throughout his lifetime, first in 1959 to Kate Byrne and they had one child before the marriage came to an end in 1969. He then wed Josephine Burge in 1985 and they remained together until he passed away on May 2nd, 1999 in Valletta, Malta after suffering from a heart attack. His remains are buried in Bruhenny Cemetery in Buttevant, Cork, Ireland.
